Welchen Einfluss hat die Schilddrüse auf unsere Haut?

What influence does the thyroid have on our skin?

Small but mighty – this saying hits the spot when it comes to our thyroid. This small organ, which is located below our larynx, weighs a maximum of just 25 grams and influences a variety of body functions through the production and release of its two thyroid hormones T3 and T4. On the one hand, hormones are crucial for the function of our metabolism, regulate body heat and have, among other things, effects on nerves, muscles, heart, stomach and mental well-being. On the other hand, they also have a major influence on our hair and skin. When the thyroid gland doesn't work properly, your appearance can suffer.

Over- vs. under-function

When the thyroid is not working properly, it usually produces either too much or too little of the two hormones. Both over- and under-function cause malfunctions in the human body. An over-function of the thyroid ensures that our body is constantly running at full speed: sweating, rapid pulse, sleep disorders, nervousness and excessive weight loss can be a consequence . Our hair also grows faster and falls out more easily. They become finer and thinner, just like fingernails. The skin is significantly warmer than usual, often even damp or sweaty, tends to become more red and irritated and can itch. In contrast to this is hypothyroidism. Here our organism is running on the back burner, literally! Our body temperature drops, the skin becomes cool and pale and can sometimes appear swollen, especially around the eyelids. If you have an underactive thyroid, your skin and hair tend to be rough and dry and not greasy. The nails tend to become brittle and longitudinal or transverse grooves occasionally appear. In addition, symptoms such as freezing, tiredness and listlessness as well as weight gain with a consistent diet can occur. If you observe such symptoms over a longer period of time and suspect that you have an overactive or underactive thyroid, it is best to consult a doctor who will check the function of your thyroid examined. In addition to the cosmetic symptoms, hyperfunction in particular can also have serious effects on your entire organism.
