Eat smart: sun protection from the inside

Sun protection factor, sun hat, sunglasses or protective clothing - consistent protection from the sun has now become an absolute matter of course for most of us. Fortunately! But did you also know that you can boost your sun protection from within by eating certain foods? We'll tell you which nutrients you should pay attention to and where you can find them. Influence of nutrients on the skin's own protection time

We all have a certain amount of self-protection time. This is the time within which the skin is able to protect itself from redness or sunburn without additional sun protection. This natural protection depends on the individual skin type. The self-protection time of lighter types is lower than that of darker ones (please also read the articles “Your skin, your type” on our blog). Certain nutrients can extend the personal protection time, make the skin more resilient and protect against UV radiation. Vitamin A protects the skin from sunburn, keeps it supple and ensures a healthy color. It is contained in its precursors, the so-called carotenoids (provitamins), in carrots, spinach, broccoli or lamb's lettuce and is converted into vitamin A with the support of fat. Another nutrient in this series is vitamin E. It is an antioxidant and counteracts skin aging. You can find it in avocados, wheat germ oil, nuts, whole grains or cabbage. Lycopene is mainly found in red fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes. It is a secondary plant substance that, interestingly, unlike many other nutrients, increases its effect when heated. Would you like a little biology? Okay: Cooking breaks down the cell wall structure of the tomatoes so that the body can absorb the active ingredient better. It is also present in strawberries, cherries or peppers. The powerful active ingredient vitamin C protects against free radicals, environmental toxins or other carcinogenic substances. For example, it is found in all kinds of citrus fruits, red peppers and black currants.
